Also known as Route 9, this scenic byway in southern Vermont follows the path carved out in 1777 by General John Stark when he returned to New Hampshire after fighting the British at the Battle of Bennington. The 40-plus mi (65 km) route runs from Bennington in the west to Brattleboro in the east and takes in rich farmland, historic covered bridges and scenic viewpoints, making it a popular drive for sightseeing in the state.
